چکیده

The waveguiding properties of two silica-based airguiding photonic bandgap fiber designs are investigated with special emphasis on material effects. The nonlinear coefficients are found to be 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than those obtained in index-guiding microstructured fibers with large mode areas. The material dispersion of silica makes a significant contribution to the total chromatic dispersion although less than 10% of the field energy is located in the silica regions of the fibers. These findings suggest that dispersion engineering through the choice of base material may be a possibility in this type of fibers. c © 2003 Optical Society of America

Mode areas and field energy distribution in honeycomb photonic bandgap fibers

The field energy distributions and effective mode areas of silica-based photonic bandgap fibers with a honeycomb airhole structure in the cladding and an extra airhole defining the core are investigated. We present a generalization of the common effective area definition, suitable for the problem at hand, and compare the results for the photonic bandgap fibers with those of indexguiding microst...

Novel Sensor and Telecommunication Applications of Photonic Crystal Fibers

Photonic crystal fibers are novel optical waveguides containing a periodic array of air holes running along the fiber around a solid or hollow core. These fibers have recently attracted great interest in many research areas such as in nonlinear optics and measurement science as their manufacturing process allows for a high flexibility in the fiber design. Index-guiding photonic crystal fibers a...

Optical bistability and cutoff solitons in photonic bandgap fibers.

We present detailed theoretical and numerical analysis of certain novel non-linear optical phenomena enabled by photonic bandgap fibers. In particular, we demonstrate the feasibility of optical bistability in an axially modulated nonlinear photonic bandgap fiber through analytical theory and detailed numerical experiments. At 1.55microm carrier wavelength, the in-fiber devices we propose can op...

A 158 fs 5.3 nJ fiber-laser system at 1 microm using photonic bandgap fibers for dispersion control and pulse compression.

We demonstrate a 158 fs 5.3 nJ mode-locked laser system based on a fiber oscillator, fiber amplifier and fiber compressor. Dispersion compensation in the fiber oscillator was obtained with a solid-core photonic bandgap (SC-PBG) fiber spliced to standard fibers, and external compression is obtained with a hollow-core photonic bandgap (HC-PBG) fiber.

Hollow-core microstructured polymer optical fiber.

We have fabricated microstructured polymer optical fibers that guide light in a hollow core using the photonic bandgap mechanism. The hollow core allows the use of polymer fibers to be extended to wavelength ranges where material absorption typically prohibits their use, with attenuation lower than the material loss observed in the infrared. The fabrication method is similar to other microstruc...
